GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum’s Alexi Colon went 2-for-3 with a home run and a triple and the pitching trio of Taylor Rakes, Scott Simmons and Billy Sivyer limited visiting Limestone to just two hits as the 23rd-ranked Pioneers remained undefeated with a 4-2 victory Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Tusculum (11-0) remains the only undefeated team in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, while the Saints fall to 4-6 on the season.

Rakes (2-0) picked up the victory as he went three innings, allowed a hit, walked one and struck out two in a pre-determined start.

The Pioneers rattled off nine hits, including Aaron Guinn’s 3-for-3 performance, including his fourth double of the year.

Tusculum got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Cody Coffman led off with single and later. He would move to second on Trey Drewery’s infield single and advanced to third on the errant throw. After Guinn was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Coffman came across to score on Nate Reid’s groundout.

Tusculum added another run in the third when Colon blasted a shot that hit the batter’s eye screening in center field for his third round-tripper of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Limestone cut the deficit in half on Marcus Breeden’s line-drive home run down the left field line, his first of the year.

TC added another scoring tally in the fifth inning when Tripper Crisson legged out a double to right field, moved to third on Lukas Graves’ infield hit and scored on Colon’s fly out to the warning track in center field.

The Saints got the first two batters aboard in the sixth on back-to-back infield errors. Chad Balderman bunted Michael Hughey and Jake Rierson into scoring position. Josh Lyon drove in LC’s second run of the game with his ground out. But Sivyer came aboard to relieve Simmons and got the final out on his first pitch to preserve the 3-2 lead.

TC added an insurance run in the eighth as Drewery drew a one-out walk and was subbed for on the bases by pinch runner Jalen Shuffler. Shuffler moved to third on Guinn’s third base hit of the afternoon and later scored on Reid’s squeeze bunt for a 4-3 lead.

Sivyer retired the first nine batters he would face until he surrendered a two-out walk to Breeden. He completed his second save of the year when Stephen Crowe was called for runner’s interference on his grounder up the first base line to end the game.

Sivyer pitched 3 1/13 shutout innings, while allowing a walk and a strikeout.

“Our pitching staff did a great job for us today. Taylor Rakes, Scott Simmons and Billy Sivyer made quality pitches all day and Alexi Colon and Aaron Guinn were outstanding at the plate,” said Tusculum head coach Doug Jones.

Tusculum, who is off to its best start in school history, will be on the road Wednesday afternoon for a 2 p.m. contest at North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C.
