Walters State Ranked as one of the safest campuses in the nation
Walters State Community College ranks as Tennessee’s safest college campus and as the twelfth safest in the country, according to rankings by StateUniversity.com. The survey ranked 450 colleges across the country.
“College administrators, faculty and staff continue to place a premium on having safe campuses. The entire campus community, including students, are very diligent and work with the Walters State Campus Police Department to provide a safe place to learn and experience college life,” said Dr. Wade McCamey, president of the college. He was quick to praise Walters State’s Campus Police Department. Officers receive the same training and meet the same standards required by police departments across the state.
“These officers are experienced and proactive when it comes to matters of campus security. Many times, they are the first to become aware of any potential safety issues and also develop solutions to those issues. Campus Police officers as individuals are also very visible on campus and students feel very comfortable talking to them,” McCamey said.
Walters State is also known for its widely respected Public Safety Division, where hundreds of police offices complete the East Tennessee Regional Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Academy each year. The college is also a leading regional provider of homeland security training.
In addition to its own police force, the college offers escorts to walk students to cars at the end of evening classes. Red emergency phones in each parking lot connect directly to campus police.
StateUniversity.com is a website for college information. The listing is based on incidents of campus crime and are available online at www.stateuniversity.com/rank/safety_score_rank.html.
