Movies on the Town
KNOXVILLE - Knox County Public Library's popular outdoor movie series is set to start on Friday, September 5. But first, the public gets to pick the flicks. Will it be Rocky, Babe or Tootsie? Voting for this year's line up takes place in two ways: online at www.knoxlib.org or on paper at any Knox County Public Library location. The voting runs from August 13 - August 25. The final line up will be announced on August 28.
Now in its 5th year, the movie series started on Market Square to highlight the Library's extensive movie and music collection. This year, there's a twist. The movie series will be split between World's Fair Park and Market Square. The September movies (September 5, 12, & 19) will be held on the Festival Lawn of World's Fair Park. The October movies (October 3, 10, & 17) will move back to Market Square. Pre-show entertainment starts at 7:30 p.m. with the movies kick off around 8:30 p.m.
Now called "Movies on the Town," the series is a family-friendly event with all movies rated PG-13 or lower. Patrons should bring picnics to enjoy and blankets or lawn chairs.

SCPLS program a success
SEVIER COUNTY - As the summer heat rages on, the Sevier County Public Library System state-sponsored, Starship Adventure @ Your Library Summer Reading Program ends in a blaze. This year the children of Sevier County were treated to seventeen exciting programs, six each at the Sevier County Main Library and the Seymour Branch plus five programs at the Kodak Branch, to promote reading during the summer months. In addition, teens in grades 7 and up were treated to the same number of programs at each location.
This summer, over 1,400 children, parents and caregivers joined in programs featuring live animals, puppets, and a magician among other programs. The sponsors who provided funding to make these programs possible include:
· Wal-Mart
· The Blalock's Companies
· Dr. Bryan Smith, MD
· Tennessee State Bank
· Citizen's National Bank
· Sevier County Bank
· BB&T
· Dr. Samuel J. Lyle, D.V.M
· Gealon A. Thomas, DDS, PLLC
· John A. Masengill, DDS
· Seymour Breakfast Rotary Club
· Northview/Kodak Optimist Club
· Knoxville Tri-County Lions Club
· Case's B & A Building Salvage
· Parkway Medical Center & Walk-In Clinic
· Friends of Seymour Library
· Friends of Kodak Library
From preschool – 12th grade, 413 children signed up to participate in the Summer Reading Program. These children read, or were read to, an amazing number of books over the nine-week period – a total of 14,036 books! Sincere thanks is extended to the parents and caregivers of these children who gave their time to make sure their children were involved in this worthwhile program to learn and retain reading skills during summer vacation.
Space-themed stickers and coupons were incentives for developing a love of reading. The following restaurants were very generous in providing coupons for the children: Pizza Hut; Mr. Gatti's; McDonald's; Shoney's; Chick-fil-A; Texas Roadhouse; Applebee's, Kroger's, Starbuck's Coffee Company (Strawberry Plains location) and The Bakery Lady (Marjie Richardson). Businesses and local attractions also provided incentives: Dollywood; NASCAR Speedpark; Ripley's Old MacDonald's Mini Golf; Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies; Wonderworks and Reel Theatres Movies on the Parkway.
Without the support of an interested community, who wish to see the children of Sevier County excel, the results would not be as striking. The Sevier County Public Library System extends a very grateful thank you to everyone who participated - especially to the sponsors who helped to make the Summer Reading Program possible in Sevier County.
